Subject: Commercial Production of GM Mustard

Dear Sir,

Swadeshi Jagran Manch expresses its deep anguish over the central government's decision to ease FDI norms in almost all major sectors of the economy, including defence, plantation, broadcasting, single brand e-commerce, banking, construction, limited liabilities partnership, duty free shops etc.

Representatives of Swadeshi Jagran Manch and Bhartiya Kissan Sangh met Minister of Environment & Forests today, 29 July 2014, on the issue of field trials of GM Crops. Minister was apprised about the concerns of Swadeshi Jagran Manch and Bhartiya Kissan Sangh about the reported approval given to field trials of 15 GM crops by Genetic Engineering Approval Committee of Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Minister assured the members of SJM and BKS that the decision about field trials of GM crops has been put on hold.

Swadeshi Jagran Manch has received the news reports of approval of field trials of GM food crops by Genetically Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), under the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest, with shock, disbelief and anguish. Clearance of field trials for 15 Genetically Modified (GM) crops, which include major food crops such as rice, sugarcane, chickpea, brinjal and mustard among others, has been given in a meeting of the GEAC held on Friday.
