GM Food

Swadeshi Jagran Manch, an affiliate of the Sangh Parivar, has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the permission given in "undue haste" to cultivate GM Mustard crop, insisting that it is "unscientific, toxic and anti-biodiversity" and challenged claims that it will improve yield of edible oil.

According to Dr Ashwani Mahajan, national convenor of the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, those who oppose GM crops field trials are not opposing science. In an interview with Yojna Gusai and Mukesh Ranjan, Dr Mahajan not only accuses the Modi government of succumbing to pressure from MNCs, but also blames it for playing politics on economic issues.

Swadeshi Jagran Manch has received the news reports of approval of field trials of GM food crops by Genetically Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), under the Union Ministry of Environment & Forest, with shock, disbelief and anguish. Clearance of field trials for 15 Genetically Modified (GM) crops, which include major food crops such as rice, sugarcane, chickpea, brinjal and mustard among others, has been given in a meeting of the GEAC held on Friday.
