Safeguard India's interests at WTO: RSS affiliate's advice to Suresh

NEW DELHI: The Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) wrote to Commerce minister Suresh Prabhu requesting him to safeguard India's interests in the fields of agriculture, investment and e-commerce as the country's representative at the Mini-Ministerial on the World Trade Organization in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Underscoring the fact that decisions made at the Mini-Ministerial will keenly affect our socio-economic policies, the SJM advised Prabhu to establish India as an important and strong developing country voice.

The RSS-affiliate organistation also raised its concerns regarding policy proposals, like one on investment facilitation, being pushed in the WTO which may have an adverse effect on India's economy in the long run.

"We know very well from the history of the WTO that what starts off as simple 'facilitation' can end up as crucial commitments on investor protection and market access. India is trying to revise its approach on investment protection as it faces millions of rupee damages in investment lawsuits. To take up an additional commitment in a multilateral forum on investment will be a major mistake at this point in time," SJM national co-convenor Ashwani Mahajan wrote in a letter to Prabhu.
